Terms of Reference for the Urban Extensions Working Group.

 

 

Purpose of this work / anticipated value of its work:

 

To shape North Somersetís emerging core strategy, focusing on the visions for the two urban extensions southwest of Bristol and in Weston-super-Mare.

 

Key objectives:

 

1.

 

To investigate best practice examples of urban extensions.

     2.

 

To establish which solutions North Somerset is working towards for the two new extensions in the area.

3.

 

To shape the final strategies for the two extensions to ensure that the council aims for high quality, sustainable developments.

 

Scope of the work:

 

1.

 

To assess the approach which North Somerset as well as beacon councils have taken to developing urban extensions.

     2.

 

To understand how North Somerset Councilís officers are approaching the new extensions, including their overall vision for the two areas.

3.

 

To input into the core strategy to ensure that the final concept for the two extensions will enable new sustainable communities.

 

Not included in the scope:

 

1.

 

Detailed plans for the layout of the new areas. Weíre looking at the principles for how to approach the new developments rather than the detailed implementation of them.

BACKGROUND:

During 2008, the Development and Environment Department has carried out ďPlanning Together WorkshopsĒ with key stakeholders as well as a workshop for councillors to gather inspiration for the Core Strategy.

 

At the end of October 2008, the Planning Policy Manager will take his preferred option for the extensions to the Executive. After this, there will be a formal consultation period.

 

SPECIFIC QUESTIONS FOR THE PANEL TO ADDRESS:

North Somerset

ō       What is the Development and Environment Departmentís approach to the new extensions in southwest Bristol and Weston-super-Mare, including how they plan to provide infrastructure, public transport, mixed use, green areas, environmentally sustainable areas, affordable housing and sustainable communities?

ō       How has the Development and Environment Department traditionally delivered urban extensions in North Somerset?

 

Best Practice

ō       Which councils and organisations have delivered best practice examples of urban extensions?

ō       What makes these developments good?

ō       Can North Somerset borrow from these developments by translating their main features to our setting?
