West Area Committee
16th October 2008
Matters of Local Interest raised by Members (Agenda Item 5.12)
The Chairman Councillor Dr Kellaway-Marriott drew Membersí attention to the implications for Weston-super-Mare of the draft Regional Spatial Strategy.† He told the Committee that without associated employment development the number of new dwellings proposed for Weston-super-Mare would increase the level of out-commuting from the town.† Councillor Dr Kellaway-Marriott proposed that the Area Committee request the Strategic Planning and Economic Development Policy and Scrutiny Panel to include the issue as an item on its work plan, particularly in relation to the following:
Decent sustainable housing;
Services for local residents including transport;
Quality jobs in the town centre and to the east of the town;
Climate change, the councilís NERC duty and the Green Heart.
Councillor Keating urged Members to support the stance of the South West Regional Assembly, which had recently rejected the proposed changes to the draft Regional Spatial Strategy that would see additional housing numbers imposed on North Somerset.
