Briefing Note - Bus Service 121 from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare
A decision was taken by First Bus earlier in the year to withdraw their commercial bus service 121 from 10th May 2009. The route serves a number of towns and villages between Weston-s-Mare and Bristol including Locking, Banwell, Winscombe, Sandford, Churchill, Langford, Wrington, Bristol Airport, Felton and Winford. The important transport links provided by the service for all these settlements has long been recognised, and so when First Bus notified Council officers of their intention to withdraw this service plans were put in place to provide a replacement service. A number of other bus routes are also being withdrawn in this area as part of a package of savings identified by the bus company, and so this became part of a larger exercise to replace bus services.
New Service 121
Following a tendering exercise to a decision was taken by North Somerset Council to award contracts to continue the route 121. The service will now be operated by First Bus on Mondays to Saturdays and Bakers Coaches on Sunday and Bank Holiday. As a result the services will now continue beyond 10th May 2009 and will become part of the supported bus network provided by North Somerset Council. Although this route has been replaced and the travelling public will notice little difference as timetables and route frequencies are almost identical it has not been possible to replace all the services withdrawn by First Bus throughout North Somerset due to budgetary constraints. The route 121 will be monitored throughout the summer months before a decision is taken to let a longer term contracts as part of the Councils review of supported bus service in 2009/10.
